  • Hilda Ha. Võrgust väljas / Hilda Ha Off the Grid – Eva Kübar, Estonia 18 min 42 sec
    Language: German/Estonian
    2025

The film portrays one year in the life of Hilda Ha, a wild and free German woman. She is not one to stand with a big poster at a Friday For Future. Instead, she saves the planet in a quiet way, living off-grid with her one and a half year old child in Southern Estonia in a self-built tiny house with no water or electricity. Although it seems extreme, it's the most natural way of living for Hilda Ha, a conscious choice which gives her certain financial freedom – when there’s no utility bills or bank loans there is also no need to work 9 to 5. What is the price that she has to pay for this kind of simple life? And on the other hand, what are the compromises that she needs to make to function in our society? She still uses a car to drive to the nearby city and buys food from normal supermarkets because she is down to earth and sees no point in going too extreme. She just wants to build a happy life for her and her child.

  • Orange Frames – Gamid Ibadullayev, Poland, 50 min
    Language: No dialogue
    2025
Present at the event: film director Gamid Ibadullayev!

In an indeterminate future, a world devastated by a nuclear explosion leaves a woman (Małgorzata Kurek) trapped for years in the solitude of a bunker. The lingering radiation prevents her from going outside. Her reality revolves around fragments and echoes of a world now gone. One day, she leaves her shelter, embarking on an unexpected journey. On the surface, she finds herself amidst inexplicable phenomena and meets a mysterious stranger (Paweł Mandziewski).
This experimental work returns to the essence of silent cinema, blending striking visual storytelling with atmospheric soundscapes. The film delves into a post-apocalyptic vision and immense solitude, employing a poetic and symbolic narrative to immerse the viewer in a multifaceted, unfamiliar world reshaped by destruction. Its slow, contemplative pace seeks to provide a requisite space for reflection.
While the festival cinematic version includes audio, the ultimate vision for the film is as a live performance experience, where screenings are accompanied by musicians improvising in real-time.

Their journey turns into a peculiar crusade and pilgrimage through central cultural sites of Helsinki (Tavastia, the Orion cinema of the film archive…) as men are eliminated from the game one by one.
They scatter into small groups: one finds love, another hangs himself, a third is shot by a woman, a fourth dies on a soda-stained floor in a hamburger bar, each inevitably meets his fate. By the time they reach Eira, only two survive, and on the final shore, the remaining Franks (Matti Pellonpää and Pirkka-Pekka Petelius) set off together in a small rowboat toward Estonia, after an argument about the plan. The journey, however, ends, apparently off-camera, in a massive explosion, accompanied by Olavi Virta’s Valkovuokkoja as the events unfold.

In the course of a shooting day, actors Laura (26) and Mike (32) strive to get through the scenes of an intimate drama. During the breaks, they retreat behind the studio’s panoramic backdrop to resolve their acute mutual problem: Laura has decided to have an abortion while Mike is desperately trying to turn her head. In the shadows, away from the brightly lit set, screenwriter Gisella (67) observes the actors’ dynamics as the story she has written unavoidably starts to penetrate their relationship. The brutal abuse scene that Laura and Mike film next will lay bare Laura’s looming decision and unveil the true trauma of Gisella’s past.
